BONE, JOINT, AND MUSCLE INJURIES

I. SPRAINS AND STRAINS
Look for signs such as:
Pain, bruising, swelling
Obvious limb deformity
Exposed bone
Pale, bluish skin
Loss of pulse in the injured limb
Numbness down the arm or leg
Immediate Treatment
1. Remove any clothing or jewelry from the injured area
2. Apply cold compresses at once.
3. Reapply for 20 minutes every 3-4 hours for 24 hours.
If the injury is in an arm or leg, elevate it to reduce swelling and
bleeding. Rest the limb for 24 hours.
If in great pain, or if body part is not working properly, get medical help.
After 24 hours, only apply heat for the next 3 days if the muscle feels
better. Don't use the muscle as long as there is pain.
II. DISLOCATED AND BROKEN BONES
Both dislocated and broken bones are an emergency.
Seek medical help.
Do not move the victim.
Do not attempt to straighten the bone or change its position.
Do not test the bone for functioning.
Do not give anything to eat or drink.
Immediate Treatment:
1. Seek medical help.
2. Check breathing and circulation, then if necessary, perform CPR.
3. Take steps to prevent infection--do not wash or probe the wound, but
cover it with sterile dressings.
4. Splint or sling the injury in the position you found it.
5. Prevent shock. Lay the person flat, elevate feet 10-12 inches, and cover
with a blanket or clothing.
